David Colquhoun

David Colquhoun

David has a keen interest in literature, exploring poetry, songwriting and parody. He has experience performing stand-up comedy in Melbourne. He has dedicated a few years teaching English as a second language to children and adults worldwide. Now David wishes to inspire children and teach them, through his stories, to recognise social issues from a perspective of understanding. Key messages in his recent work are about recognising your unique gifts and talents, self-acceptance and embracing others for that same difference.

George Orwell, Ken Kesey and Aldous Huxley are but a few of David’s favourite wordsmiths. While he writes, he enjoys listening to a little light rock and cool jazz. When he’s not writing, one of his favourite pastimes involves strumming his acoustic guitar.

David is the author of two children’s books, with more on the way. His first book, Henry Wants to Fly, reminds children to recognise their strengths, and sometimes this can only happen by trying. For if we focus on our limitations, we might miss out on some fantastic potential. Blue Ants, Red Ants, Green Ants is the most recent addition to David’s collection. This story approaches racism with delicacy (if jam sandwiches are a delicacy!) and playful humour.

Ants are worker insects; they work together for the good of their colony. So, what happens when ants refuse to let a little paint get in the way of snagging a delicious jam sandwich? Well, for one, they don’t look like regular ants anymore. It’s what’s on the inside that counts, right? Blue Ants, Red Ants, Green Ants is a story that reminds us that though we might be different on the outside, we share the same essence.

Blue Ants, Red Ants, Green Ants presents children with a healthy and enlightening perspective on diversity. This book illustrates a common and immediate reaction to differences; it shares a message of inclusivity rather than remaining divided through fear and uncertainty. In this, his second published children’s book, David Colquhoun approaches an essential social topic with playful rhyme and a little bit of humour for good measure.

This book follows David’s first book ‘Henry wants to fly’, and is sure to be a popular addition to any library.
