Julie McAloonJulie is a teacher’s aide by profession. Inspired by her work, she endeavours to appeal to children and adults alike. Julie has a deep appreciation for writers such as Mem Fox, David Walliams and Adam Silvera. Julie hopes to entertain her audience by evoking joy, and recognition of the messages instilled in the pages of her stories. So too, she hopes to cultivate a love for reading in her audience. As she writes, Julie prefers to be in silence to limit distractions. Moved by her late mother’s courage and strength, Julie decided it was high time she made a move on her passions and aspirations. Her first published work, Fergus, the Substitute Frog, is a beautifully rhythmic piece of prose. This children’s book is about a frog that fills in for other animals when they are unwell or unable to fulfil their duties, just like a substitute teacher! Julie instils a cheerful cadence into every sentence. Julie also makes snuffle mats for dogs, which she sells at markets with a friend twice a month. What are we to do when Red the rooster cannot cock-a-doodle-doo? We get a substitute, of course! And not just any substitute at that. We call on Fergus, the substitute frog. And Fergus doesn’t just “cock-a-doodle-doo!” Oh, no! He caws and oinks and moos too! And won’t we have fun witnessing him do all of that? But what should happen if Fergus loses his croak? Who will fill in for the substitute? Fergus, the Substitute Frog is a fun story of rhythm and rhyme that will surely entertain. Julie McAloon’s first published work is a picture book for children inspired by the classroom. If you’ve never heard of an agency that finds substitute animals on short notice, this story will be a welcome addition to your library. Children, adults and teachers alike are guaranteed to get a laugh out of this one! |
